Metalnikov Ivan Stepanovich

Born June 25, 1929 in the village Pochinovka Presnogorkovsky district of Kustanay region of Kazakhstan. He studied at the Vladivostok Art School (1949-1954) with V.S.Zdanovich and V.M.Sviridov, Kharkov State Art Institute (1956-1962) at the faculty of painting with B.V.Kosyrev, S.F.Besedin and A.P.Lyubimsky.

After graduation, he worked as a teacher first at the Khabarovsk State Pedagogical Institute (1963-1967), then in the late 60's he moved to Magadan and taught at the Magadan State Pedagogical Institute (1967-1970), Children's Art School (1972-1975).

In 1977 he moved to Rostov-on-Don, where he lived and taught at the Art and Graphic Department at the Rostov State Pedagogical Institute (1977-1979) and the Rostov Art School named after M.B.Grekov (1979). Since 1964 he took an active part in city, regional and zonal art exhibitions.

Member of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR since 1971.

Worked in the genre of thematic painting, portrait and landscape. Works of the Magadan period are dedicated to the toilers of the North and depicted a man outside of everyday life, but on the scale of fate and history, society and the collective. The artist was the first to depict on the canvas one of the discoverers of Kolyma gold Yu.A.Bilibin. Among the monumental paintings of the artist - a mural "Labor Rhythms of the North" in the hall of the regional library named after A.S.Pushkin. A.S.Pushkin (Magadan). To this period includes a very cheerful in its structure of the painting "Festival of the Sun", in the figurative solution of which a strong, constructive-plastic basis of the plot is combined with a laconically written northern landscape. Paintings created in Rostov ("Life and Memory", 1980), speak of the author as an artist of sharp, pictorial-plastic vision, striving for constant live contact with life, with nature. These principles corresponds and a series of landscape sketches made by the artist on the construction of BAM in 1979 and 1980.
