In 1978 he graduated from the Sverdlovsk Art School. In 1981 he entered the Surikov Institute (Professor T. T. Salakhov).

Participated in the group "Boat" with Mikhail Basov, Victor Chuvashev, Pavel Aksenov, which was part of the group "Thanatos".

In 2012, Sergey Orlov became a teacher at the Izhevsk "Skolkovo School", teaching the course "The School of Contemporary Art of Sergey Orlov".
