Arkhangelsky Dmitry Ivanovich

1885-1980

Graphist, landscape painter, teacher, ethnographer, archeologist, local historian, first teacher of the artist A.A. Plastov. Since 1944 member of the Union of Artists of the USSR.

Born February 22, 1885 in Simbirsk. The Arkhangelsky family lived on Shatalnaya Street (Koryukina Street). Dmitry Ivanovich's first drawing teacher was an amateur artist Alexander Varfolomeyevich Stroganov. Since 1904, landscape painter Pavel Ilyich Puzyrevsky, who ran his own art studio in Simbirsk, taught painting to the future artist.

In 1910, P.I. Puzyrevsky together with D.I. Arkhangelsky organized "Goncharovsky" exhibition. First in Simbirsk, then in St. Petersburg were presented paintings and sketches depicting the Volga and the Volga region. Most of the proceeds from the exhibition went to the construction of a house-monument to the writer.

In 1913, Arkhangelsky successfully passed the examination for the title of drawing teacher at the Academy of Arts.

In 1916, Dmitry Ivanovich went to the front. He makes sketches, portraits of soldiers, landscapes. However, the works of this period have not survived. In 1917 Arkhangelsky is elected a soldier's deputy. In 1918 - released from service as a teacher.

In Simbirsk he again engaged in painting. In 1918 together with the artist P.S. Dobrynin arranged an exhibition "Artistic values of Simbirsk in watercolors by Arkhangelsky and Dobrynin".

In the early 20-ies the artist makes a series of linocuts, drawings, watercolors devoted to the architecture of Simbirsk. In 1921 the book "Simbirsk antiquity in Arkhangelsky's drawings" was published. To each drawing the author gives an explanation, telling about the features of the monument.

In 1928 Arkhangelsky published an article "Linogravure in Ulyanovsk (1918-1928)", where he wrote: "Linogravure, which had its golden age (19-24 years), is now peacefully living out its time in our province".

In 1934 Dmitry Ivanovich left Ulyanovsk. For seven years he taught at the S.T. Shatsky school-colony "Vigorous Life," located near the Obninskoye peninsula of the Kiev railroad, 105 kilometers from Moscow (now Obninsk, Kaluga region). In the late 1930s, the Arkhangelskys moved to the settlement of Ovrazhki Vyalki, later renamed Rodniki.

From 1930 to the 1960s, Arkhangelsky worked on the series "Lenin's Places in Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk." In 1938 he participated in the creation of the graphic album "At the birthplace of Lenin"

Personal exhibitions of D.I. Arkhangelsky were held in Kazan (1952), Moscow (1955, 1956), Ulyanovsk (1960).

January 13, 1980 Dmitry Ivanovich died. He was buried in the village of Rodniki.
